Welcome Students!

Expressway is here to help. We used to be students too, you know. We remember what it’s like. Being a college student makes you a uniquely qualified customer and Expressway is happy to help you through the process. There are a few things we need from you first, so follow our step-by-step instructions on how to rent from Expressway.

Renting in 5 Quick Steps

  1. Step 1:

Submit a quote request on our site, shoot us an email with your gear list, or call us and let us know what you need.

    • Setting up an account on the website is a great way to get started and it will get you signed up for our mailing list, too. Now you’ll always be in the loop. Expressway is a great resource for emerging artists to get connected with the community.
  2. Step 2:

You will receive an email with the following materials:

  3. Step 3:

When you receive your welcome email, go ahead and fill out the rental agreement to the best of your ability. Use the attached sample if you’re stuck on something. You can provide your equipment office or one of your professors as “trade references”.

  4. Step 4:

Email us the completed rental agreement and make sure you let our rental agent know that you are a student and where you go to school. They will be excited to meet a new customer and walk you through the process. There are usually discounts and special promotions available to students and they will fill you in.

  5. Step 5:

    Insurance.

Need Insurance, No Problem!

Most Universities’ film programs offer rental insurance through their equipment office and we can help you figure out that process. You will have to let the school know that you are renting equipment from Expressway, by emailing the replacement value list and sample COI to the risk management department. Your equipment room manager should know who to contact. If they have further questions, please put us in direct contact and we can help with the leg work. Some schools do not offer insurance and we can work with you on that too. Check out these additional options that are available:

If Your School Does Not Provide Insurance

  1. Credit Card Hold

If the order is under $5,000 you can place a hold on your credit card in place of an insurance policy as long as your limit will cover the replacement value. There is a catch to this method. The hold may take up to seven days to clear once the hold is placed on the card and we cannot accept this method if the rental is more than four days long.

  2. Orders Below $3500 Replacement Value

When you submit your order, you will receive a replacement value list in your welcome email. If the replacement value is below $3500 you do not need insurance, but you will still need a valid student ID and a reference from either your equipment room or one of your professors in the program.

  3. Rent Insurance

We always highly recommend that customers have insurance, whenever possible, because it would really suck to be on the hook if an expensive piece of equipment gets damaged. There are short term insurance solutions you can buy from companies like www.insuremyequipment.com & www.productioninsurance.com. Depending on the replacement value and dates, the cost will vary but it is affordable compared to the cost of a potential loss. When filling out the form, make sure to include the following steps:

    • Fill in the rented equipment value. That is the only rental coverage you need.
    • Be sure to check the boxes for unattended vehicle waiver and loss of use.
    • Be sure to select the $1,000,000 liability coverage as well. Rental Houses do require liability coverage as well as rented equipment coverage.
  4. Use Your Client’s Insurance

If you are already baller enough to have clients while you are still enrolled in college, it may be worth asking if your client has insurance that you could use to rent the equipment. We would be happy to speak to the company or their insurance provider to sort through it if they are willing to work with you on a COI. Please also note that we will need the rental agreement and the COI to match. So your client would have to fill out the rental agreement in this case.
