The Sony A7sIII notably builds upon the outstanding success of its predecessor, the A7sII, with only a slightly larger form factor. The five year gap allowed Sony to put out a highly reliable camera with significant updates, while retaining everything an A7sII shooter would be familiar with. In addition, they have developed the FX3 to take all of the video-friendly features of the A7sIII - removing typically photocentric features like the eyepiece and adding components like the top handle with built-in XLR ports - and added it to their FX line of digital cinema cameras.

Sony has optimized almost everything about the previous generation, including but not limited to, the new 12.1MP Exmor R BSI CMOS Sensor along with the updated BIONZ XR image process for faster performance, reduced noise, wider dynamic range, UHD4K 120p (with a slight crop to 3840 x 2160) or 60p at full sensor width, and internal 10-bit 4:2:2: recording.

The improved sensor and processors also enable faster readout which assists in reducing rolling shutter.Sony has also made significant improvements in the thermal management system allowing for 10-bit 4K/60 shooting for over an hour.

The A7sIII also offers more flexibility in shooting formats, from XAVC HS (higher compression, more decompression work done on your editing machine) to XAVC S-I (less compression, bigger files, but less stress on editing machine.) You can also output 16-bit RAW up to 60p to an external recorder like the Atomos Ninja V for even more flexibility with your footage.

Another major update is the on-sensor Phase Detection based AutoFocus which uses AI-trained phase detection that can identify eyes, faces, heads, and bodies - making it much more reliable for tracking subjects even when they turn their heads. This provides a much more reliable autofocus system versus the contrast based one that involves focus racking back and forth before locking.

From a physical standpoint, the largest improvement is the inclusion of a flipout articulating LCD screen versus the tilt-out screen on the A7sII. The flipout screen now allows the user to see the screen while they are looking towards the lens, which works nicely for vlogging or any one-person show scenario, and generally just more flexibility in where you want to view the screen from.

The A7sIII also has increased storage options. It’s predecessor had a single SD card slot whereas the A7sIII has dual slots that can utilize either UHS-II SD Cards or CFExpress Type A cards in each, allowing for redundancy or relay recording.

Lastly, the A7sIII now utilizes a larger NP-Z100 battery over the A7sII’s NP-FW50, allowing for longer standalone duration, making it a much more desirable option for gimbal or lightweight drone work.

All in all, the A7sIII handedly improves upon the previous generation in a lot of ways that users would find to be worthy of the jump, while still retaining a lot of the similarities that will allow for a quick transition with a fairly low learning curve if they are experienced with the A7sII. Sony did a great job following the general rule of “if it isn’t broken, don’t fix it” while making some great features even better.
